1. What is the difference between scheduling a career counseling appointment versus an academic counseling appointment?

Both career counseling and academic counseling are essential to guide you towards achieving your educational and career goals. Here is the breakdown of what to expect and the guidance provided for career and academic counseling:

CAREER COUNSELING – assistance with exploring students’ major and career; discovering students’ interests, values, skills, and personality through various career assessments, developing a resume and cover letter; creating a career and comprehensive educational plan. If you are unsure about your major, scheduling an appointment with a career counselor will provide you with the steps of career planning and assistance to making a decision about your major and career options.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING – assistance with creating a comprehensive educational plan, inquiring about open and/or closed courses, clearing holds and prerequisites, discussing courses needed to complete and timeline of completion for various awards offered at LBCC, assisting with calculating GPA and ways to improve students’ academic status, guidance with understanding college procedures and policies such as course repetition and academic renewal.

4. I heard that there are career assessments I can take --- which ones and how do I access them?

There are many free career assessments that our career counselors will recommend to students.

5. If I choose a major, will I have to choose that field for the rest of my life?

Choosing a major does not mean you are choosing a specific type of job. Many majors have various career options and will allow you to find work in different fields and/or industries, as long as you have the necessary skills and experience. It is important to seek career counseling assistance to further discuss your options with a career counselor.

6. If I choose a specific major, do I also need to choose a specific occupation?

For most occupations, you do not need have a specific major or complete a specific degree. There are exceptions, such as nursing or engineering, which require you to have a specific degree.

7. Will I fall behind if I change my major?

Sometimes changing your major does not increase the amount of time to finish your certificate/degree. However, it can take your longer to complete your award if you change your major when you are one or two semesters away from finishing your certificate/degree.

8. How do I know that the major I choose is right now me?

There are no guarantees to find out if a major is right for you until you try out and complete some of the courses in that major. It is important to find as much information as possible about the major or careers. You can make the best decision for yourself at the time with the information you have gathered. Here are some strategies to gather your information:

Speak to a career counselor
Gain self-knowledge and resources through attending various career workshops
Take Counseling 7, Counseling 48, and/or Counseling 50
Get experience by volunteering and/or obtaining internship opportunities
Conduct informational interviews to obtain in-depth information about certain career options
Utilize our Virtual Career Center on Canvas to obtain additional information
Talk to professors, family, friends, etc. about your career goals

9. How do I start looking for a job or internship?

The process of looking for a job or an internship depends on your interest area, your level of experience, and your personal and career goals. The Career Center has various job readiness resources that students can access, as personalize assistance through one-on-one appointment with our Workforce Job Development Training Coordinator.
